The Company

Chez Alaska Cooking School was founded in 2006 by Laraine Derr, and is the only recreational cooking school in Juneau.  It was founded on the belief that Southeast Alaskan foods should be prepared in the tastiest way possible. We use resources from the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.

Laraine received a teaching degree in chemistry in 1964 and has worked in various education positions from the head of the School of Business and Public Administration at University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) to teaching a small business class there.  She gained her Master of Business Administration degree from UAS as well.  She received her Food and Beverage Management Certificate with honors from the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Motel Association, and has been catering receptions since 1983.  Laraine and her husband, Romer, are well known all over the state of Alaska for the countless gourmet meals they’ve prepared and served in their home for the benefit of charities.


The Facility

The facility is a newly remodelled business space, fully furnished with modern cooking equipment.  We have individual hands-on workspaces or presentation seating for up to 20 students per class.  Our classroom sports a warm and clean visual aesthetic that suits our family oriented atmosphere.
